Strange cloud like icon near battery meter on iPhone?

Strange icon appeared left of battery meter this morning. It's similar to a text cloud normally seen in comic books to show when a character is speaking. Its color is white but it also turns into a light orange at times. It appears to have a 1 (or it could be a "!" to small to identify) in it. I search the internet to see if anybody had this icon, also looked at the user's guide. I'm using a 3Gs with iOS 5.1.1. Does anybody know what it is? BTW its not the Bluetooth icon.

Ok so i got an iphone 4s (unlocked) at the beginning of the month i also got applecare+.im 15 years old (and a half) and i want to be able to use this phone until i'm 18 so i can switch to my own plan (i know this is early planning but thats just what i do) so i was wondering how long an iphone should/ will last (if i don't drop it or anything)

Okay, so it randomly just cracked. Like a HUGE crack. I'm really scared to tell my parents. Is it possible to walk into an apple store and have them fix it right there? What should I do? :\
