While Restoring iphone 5, how do I get lost texts?

I asked my brother to text me right when I started restoring and updating my iphone, and it said it's going to take 2 hours because my laptop sucks.
If I don't receive my bro's text when it's done, how can I get back all the texts I received while it was updating and restoring?

Why is the iPhone 5s battery so awful?

Just got brand new 5s yesterday. Immediately turned off all of the battery-hogging features (LTE, location services, notifications, app refresh, spotlight, airdrop). I don't hav any music or videos on here. All I used was safari and email. But the battery drains before my eyes. What the hell? Even my 4-year old iPhone 4 lasted longer. What gives?

When I connect my iPhone 4 to my iTunes, it says 'iPhone could not be connected because it is timed out'. Or something like that. So I can't transfer my music from iTunes to my iPhone.

Added (1). so i have an iphone 4 and its very broken. It is not only very slow but the screen has been completely shattered for the last 6 months. I've tried putting tape on the screen or a screen protector but it just doesn't work. I'm not up for a contract and my family (yes i'm still on my familys plan) won't let me break my contract. Is there anything i can do without paying those contact fees? Should i jailbreak an iphone?!

Using screen guard and back guard to protect iPhone 4s?

I want to use my iphone4s without back cover which makes it bulky. Using screen protector will be sleek to use and carry. However I feel that the camera at the back side will get scratches, if the back side is guarded by a thin layer of sheet only but Please help me and suggest if this is practical and I will not harm my iphone by getting rid of rub-plastic cover.
