What to do when iphone3gs freezes on the spinning circa when turning off?

Iphone battery was very low and i was on the phone till the battery died. As it dies and the spinning cursor comes up before it turns off, i put it on charge only to find it still spinning and not turning on/off let alone charging. I have tried charging it and waiting without charge to die for about half an hour but its still showing the spinning cursor.i've held the on/off switch but nothing and i don't have any of my stuff backed up which i'm afraid to loose really don't want it to have to restart:/ any help people? Can't live without the phone especially when i need it as an alarm in the morning!
