Possible scam on iphone IMEI number?

So i'm having 2 people talk to me through gumtree mail who both sound an awful lot like each other from what they're saying and how they talk, saying that my phones deffo on contract and they need the IMEI number to check, and that they're saying it'll get blocked and someone's told them its on contract etc, and that they were nearly scammed with the same phone i bought on gumtree before, what do you guys think, it sounds a bit fishy

Do not give the imei number to anyone as they can ring up insurance company say its there's n then say it been stolen so be carefull if you want to no if its contract or not ring up your provider like 02 orange three and give them the imei number n they can tell you but don't give it to anyone else, sounds like a scam to me

Your IMEI is like your mother, your wife, your toothbrush. Would you ever give your mother to someone you don't know? And even if you did know them, the IMEI can be used to seriously harm your MODEM which is responsible for you connecting to ANY wireless carrier. NEVER give it to anyone

Tell them to take a hike.
Tell them that they can verify a checkmend report when collecting, and paying cash. (£1.99)

If you are selling a handset, then sell at CeX, No hassle, no comeback.

Very fishy. The imei won't tell them anything about your contract. Your contract is for the number, which is on your sim, not the handset.

The imei is basically a serial number for the handset and can be used to block the handset and stop it working if it is lost/stolen. This is in addition to the sim which has its own number.
