Router is making my internet slow?

I have a Netgear Router WNDR3400. Over time it's made my internet slow. When I play my PS3 online, it makes my game lag (COD).It never used to do this and I've never had any issues with it. It will lag and I will reset my router and it works fine. It's gotten worse these past few weeks. My iPhone sometimes will not connect to to the router until I reset the router. This has only happened twice. As for my laptop, sometimes YouTube videos will load extremely slowly. I've called my ISP and had them test the connection and everything was fine. I tried different Ethernet cords and still the same. I'm convinced it's my router. Everything is updated and I haven't messed with any of the router settings. If anyone can help me figure this out, I would greatly appreciate it. Is it time for a new router? I don't think so, I've only had this one for about 2 years.

Buy a new router. 2 years is a good life span for a router. You can get a new one for about $20 - $25.It's worth it when you save yourself the headache of trying to figure out what's wrong with your old one.

First the router does not make your internet slow. The router can handle speeds far greater than your Internet speed. It handles several pcs on the LAN side at 100 Mbps; your WAN side handles the feed from your ISP which is not likely over 10 Mbps.

Secondly, if you feel you are seeing a slower speed, measure it. Do not assume a download from some web site is a measure of speed. Most downloading servers do not deliver anywhere near the max available speed; in fact they throttle back to be able to feed several users and as the number of users increases, the speed per user drops.

Thirdly, the Internet speed is the speed that is used by all users; if you have 4 users downloading large files, each will have approximately 25% of the total speed as it is spread among all users. When you run a download test, all other users must be off line.

Fourthly, I note that you have a wireless router. I suspect you have not implemented all the security steps available to you and freeloaders have hacked in. Install and implement rigid security and this keeps freeloaders from getting in. My guess is that this is the real cause of your apparent slow speed.

If you're gaming over wireless, you should not only be using wireless-N technology, but you should also set it up that all other devices, that are incapable of N-speed are forced into a ghetto of using a different frequency that only provides b/g. I don't know what settings your router has to accomplish this, but they should be there since your router claims it is "dual band."
