Should I buy a iPhone 5 or a dslr camera?
I leave for basic training with the military pretty soon and I'm confused on wether I should get a dslr camera or a iPhone 5, I have an iPhone 4S but the camera has no focus
Save your money until you get through basic. You will not be able to use either a camera nor probably your phone.
Once you have completed your advanced training, then think about what you want.

If you're planning on using the camera at basic training, that's not going to happen (as previously stated).
If you're just asking in general terms because you have money and can't decide which one to buy… Well since you posted this in the camera section, most of the answers (including my own) are going to tell you that a DSLR > iPhone5…
If photography is not the thing you want to focus on, then iPhone 5 would be a better choice for you.
Between such different pieces of kit it is impossible for a stranger to help.
What would I buy? - neither! I already have a perfectly good smartphone and a DSLR.
