Should i buy canon 70d or iphone5s?

I don't want to ask my mom to buy these instead i saved my money so i can afford one. I have an iphone 4 and nikon 3100. What will be worth for an upgrade? I used them both regularly for photography. Any suggestions?

What precise inadequacy of your 3100 do you expect the Canon 70D to solve? If you have any lenses, they can't be used on Canon cameras. The same goes for the iPhone 5? While it is reputed to have a good camera, it still pales in comparison to all that an SLR can do. It fills the role of a point and shoot.

Apparently the iPhone 5s camera is actually quite decent, so if you're not shooting sports or anything too demanding, it might be enough.

The Canon 70d is obviously going to be far more flexible (and expensive) than the iPhone, but then again it doesn't have all the other functions that the iPhone has. It takes photos and video, that's it. And you'll need a lens for it as well, if it doesn't come with the kit lens.

So I'd say the iPhone if you mainly take casual snaps, and the 70d if you're somewhat more serious about photography.

If you have a Nikon 3100, you do not need to buy another camera. If you can't take good photos with that, then you won't be able take good photos with anything.
Phones are no good for photography - except for snaps, when you find yourself without a real camera. The main problem with most smart phones (including the iphone) is that they have no optical zoom, are useless in low light, and have a fixed wide angle lens, and poor optics - which makes them particularly bad for portraits. A phone camera isn't even as good as most modern point and shoots, far less a DSLR.
The reality of typical iphone photography is somewhat more disappointing than the hype. There are enough twisted/distorted faces on the interwebs already.

You have a good camera and you have a cell 'phone camera, too. You're considering an upgrade… OK, what new feature or option will the next camera or cell 'phone camera have that you don't have now? Rather than another camera, have you considered adding more glass to your arsenal of lenses, perhaps a "faster" zoom, or a faster tele-zoom? Cell 'phone cameras can't possibly compete with DSLR cameras… At least not yet, anyway. Save your money. You'll probably want to buy something else later on.
