Static in speakers caused by TV and Computer?

I'm having a problem with my sound system. Every time I plug the audio cable into my desktop computer, a loud buzzing sound comes out from the speakers. The same thing happens when I plug the cable into the TV.

HOWEVER, there's no static or humming at all when I plug the audio cable into my laptops, Macbook Pro and a Gaming Laptop, even when they are plugged in and charging. There's also no static when I plug the audio cable into a mobile device such as an iPad, iPod, and iPhone. So, I know the problem could not be the cable or amplifier.

I tried to see if the buzzing would go away if both the computer and amplifier weren't grounded, but the buzzing remained.

Any ideas what could be causing this static sound?

~2007 Dell Dimension w/ Windows 7
~2007 Samsung 46" LCD TV

It's just an interference. If there are many electronics around that area, move some away.

TV's and PC's have high frequency hard edged signals in them

It is very easy to get pick up of those signals,
The input to an amplifier is high impedence, and inductive pickup readily generates a signal if you are feeding from a low impended source eg Speaker outputs.

The output of a PC is meant to drive a Speaker - high current / low impedence
and induced signals are high impedence /no current and thus 'vanish' when arriving at a speaker (no ummph to do any work…)

I therefore suspect you are doing the same from the TV,
- Taking a speaker output and driving it into the same high impedence 'high sensitivity' input.

Solutions are:
a) use proper pre-amp 'signal' level outputs (red / white sockets or similar on a Scart skt)
b) put a proper matching impedence (as you always should!) at the end of the line,
so maybe 50-80 ohms is a typical PC speaker impedence, so use that. And it will be low enough for the TV also (50 is way lower than the 10-100 Thousand (k) of the amp)

So answer is… Put low level signals into signal inputs designed for them,
and high level power outputs in similar high level inputs expecting them.
Don't mix and match / disrespect impedence matching on transmission lines (that's what it is)

Oh, try not to mix terms…
Buzzing - is constant single tones low or high /changing or not.
Static - is random crackling sounds, like a geiger counter (even if fast)

You only have buzzing as far as I can see.

  • Why don't Climate Change Supporters care at all about the massive environmental damage caused by our ballooning population? CO2 is comparatively simple to eliminate than giving up iPhones because they require rare earth metals; and it isn't like our consumer waste just disappears when we throw it away.   • Static/muffing sound in my Music? So I listen to a lot of classical music. All my music are cds and I use apple's lossless convertor to put them into my iphone. However when I listen to them on my iphone 4s I normally hear a static sound or muffing sound. I have a Klipsch S3 headphone. I was thinking of getting better AKG headphones, will that help to remove the Static sound?/
