Unlocking iPhone / carrier help? Emergency

So I currently have an iPhone locked to Rogers. I wanted to get it unlocked as I'm switching carriers. So I talked to the Rogers lady who said it's set to be unlocked all I need to do is put in another carrier SIM card and restart it and I'll be good to go. So I put in a non active Telus sim to see if it worked and it said no service at the top. So I talked to the lady again and she said that oh it says no service because it's non active if it were still locked the it would say sim invalid. But I'm worried cuz I didn't reset my phone is that why it didn't say Telus? Can you please help me out I just wanna know my phone is unlocked for sure before I switch carriers

Unlock is a bit complicate. You have to insist.

I know for a fact they are factory unlocked. And yes they will work on Tmobile. But my friend sold me his phone and his service is still there but its not connected. Will restoring the phone through iTunes factory unlock it?
