Using my iphone in new york without it charging me alot?

I just want to use the camera on my iphone as a camera as i can't afford to buy a separate cam, is it posible for me to use the camera and maybe be able to reseive a few texts off my parents in uk without using the internet or it charging me to turn it on?

Added (1). Sorry forgot to say how do i turn the internet off as i figure thats what charges are for

It doesn't charge you money to turn your phone on in a different country…
I think your parents might have to pay more to send international texts but I'm not entirely sure.

Yes you can

Jenna is wrong… If you leave cellular data turned on the phone will constantly communicate (check for emails, facebook messages etc… ) with the network, which will cost you. Almost everything an iPhone does uses data.

On the iphone, in settings turn off cellular data. That way you won't be charged. You can also put the iPhone into airplane mode, this will turn off all communication capability and still allow you to use the camera or non-networked apps (i.e.listen to music)

Your hotel may have Wi-Fi or you can go into any McDonalds or Starbucks and use their free Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet and send/receive texts/email… Check facebook etc.without it costing you anything. There are Starbucks all over Manhattan, shouldn't be hard to find one. Lots of places offer free Wi-Fi, just check what is available via settings/Wi-Fi.

Just keep cellular data turned off an you will be fine.

  • Why doesn't my gps work in New York? So I was in New York a few days ago and when I was in Manhattan I tried to get to times square. My cars gps, my galaxy s4 gps and my friends iphone had the same problem. The gps would tell me to go the opposite route then halfway go another direction. Could this problem happen because I was roaming? Or is new York that big that it causes gps's to break?
  • Where can I buy an iPhone 5s (no contract) in New York? I'm going for a visit in a couple of weeks, its cheaper than it is here. Is it still out of stock? Where would I be able to buy it on a no-contract basis? Also, will I loose the warranty that comes with it if I use it in Canada?
  • What apps can make living in New York easier? My sister is moving to New York in a few weeks. She has never been and is somewhat intimidated by the whole change. What can make the transition easier? Ipad or iphone apps are the things I'm actually looking for. Maps, restaurants, discounts, anything goes. Anything you think that will make life easier there?
  • Want to buy an iphone or ipod touch in new york? I'm going to new York in two weeks, and I was wondering if I would be able to buy an iphone there, cus everyone says there much cheaper in the us, but obviosuloy i'm going to be using it in the uk so I would have to buy it unlocked and get a new sim ect… So would that just rise the price even more, making it pointless to buy it in new York. Also I was wondering how much an ipod touch would cost over there, is there any point me buying either of them over there?
