Why doesn't my gps work in New York?
So I was in New York a few days ago and when I was in Manhattan I tried to get to times square. My cars gps, my galaxy s4 gps and my friends iphone had the same problem. The gps would tell me to go the opposite route then halfway go another direction. Could this problem happen because I was roaming? Or is new York that big that it causes gps's to break?
GPS can be sporadic! I was in Mexico earlier this year and could not get a gps signal anywhere.
To operate properly a GPS receiver must have at least four GPS satellites in sight. That is often difficult in "urban canyons", i.e. In streets surrounded by tall buildings, which is largely the case city centers like Manhattan. Less satellites (3 is the bare minimum) lowers the accuracy of the positions your device computes.
That said, an in-car GPS (i.e. Built-in) is connected to more devices such as the odometer (to track your actual speed) and gyroscopes (to track direction and changes) that enables it to continue giving directions even when no GPS signal is available.
Also GPS-computed locations come with inherent inaccuracies that get larger if few satellites are available. In dense urban areas, it is common for your GPS device to think it is on the wrong street and so give you incorrect directions.
The tall buildings can make it difficult for your GPS to connect with the necesary satellites. When that happens, the GPS usually has your location wrong and then gives wrong directions.
- Where can I buy an iPhone 5s (no contract) in New York? I'm going for a visit in a couple of weeks, its cheaper than it is here. Is it still out of stock? Where would I be able to buy it on a no-contract basis? Also, will I loose the warranty that comes with it if I use it in Canada?
- What apps can make living in New York easier? My sister is moving to New York in a few weeks. She has never been and is somewhat intimidated by the whole change. What can make the transition easier? Ipad or iphone apps are the things I'm actually looking for. Maps, restaurants, discounts, anything goes. Anything you think that will make life easier there?
- Want to buy an iphone or ipod touch in new york? I'm going to new York in two weeks, and I was wondering if I would be able to buy an iphone there, cus everyone says there much cheaper in the us, but obviosuloy i'm going to be using it in the uk so I would have to buy it unlocked and get a new sim ect… So would that just rise the price even more, making it pointless to buy it in new York. Also I was wondering how much an ipod touch would cost over there, is there any point me buying either of them over there?
- Using my iphone in new york without it charging me alot? I just want to use the camera on my iphone as a camera as i can't afford to buy a separate cam, is it posible for me to use the camera and maybe be able to reseive a few texts off my parents in uk without using the internet or it charging me to turn it on? Sorry forgot to say how do i turn the internet off as i figure thats what charges are for
