What are the chances of my iPhone surviving its submersion in water?

I dropped my iPhone 5 in the toilet (like an idiot) and after pulling it out, drying it off and all that, it still worked. I thought all was ok and I survived a tragedy.

Not so.

You see, about 30 minutes later the phone shut off and refused to turn back on. Great. I tried to keep it off but the thing would keep turning itself back on (it would stay stuck on the apple logo) and ended up getting really hot in my pocket (I wasn't able to rush home to fix it, you see). I'm hoping the heat helped dry out the inside.

Anyway, I dried it off, tried to turn it on (it doesn't seem like it's registering a charge now, although it does show the blinking "no charge" symbol, so I take that as a good sign), and after that didn't work I put some rice in a ziploc bag and shoved it in.

I'm obviously going to have to wait 48 hours to see if it worked, but what are the chances of my phone coming out alive? It was in the water for 10 seconds, and it took about an hour before it hit the rice.

Really hope you put your phone in a bowl of rice for 24 hours because that would soak the water our of it

Put it in uncooked rice for an entire 24 hours

Then try charging it… If it doesn't charge try leaving it in rice again for 24 hours

Well, I once dropped my phone too into the water and pretty much same happened with my phone too but it did not survive. I had to take it to a shop to repair it and looks like will also will have to. An iPhone is not made to survive water so, it's better you take it to some serive centre before some permenent damage is done.

Mmm water damage. If water damage is done it won't matter what you do now. Let it dry several days and hope it works, otherwise you need to take it in.

Problem with electronics getting wet isn't the wetness - it's the running current through them when they're wet that kills them. Water is conductive (as are whatever awful things are in toilet water -- salts, minerals, etc). The thing probably shorted when it was powered on.

You can still try the rice trick, and it may still work, depending on what triggered the failure (say it's just a fried battery, and you're out having to replace the battery for instance) but I wouldn't be terribly optimistic, I'm sorry to say.

It worked fine after being put through the torture test. So the chances may be good if you did not try to operate it.

  • What's the chances of actually being able to get a iPhone on eBay for really cheap? There are listings where the bidding starts at 99 cents. I just found one where nobody has bid on it yet, but it still has about 23 hours to go. What's the chances of getting an iPhone 5 super cheap like that from an eBay listing? As the time goes down will more people start to bid? If the seller has good reviews then does the chances of them trying to scam people go down? Or can a seller have fake reviews like you can buy followers on instagram?
  • What program could I use to make a game like surviving high school (android/iPhone app)? For those who don't know, surviving high school is a 2D text-based choose your path game. It has multiple endings, branching storyline, and a few rpg elements. I want to make a game similar to Surviving High School but not to a degree of completely stealing their concept. Can you help me find the tools and point me in the right direction? I have no coding skills but i'm willing to learn if the program comes with any readable materials.
  • What are the chances of Apple fixing my iPhone for free under warranty? I'm sending my iPhone 6 in tomorrow because the screen is lifted. All over and it won't pop back into place, I'm able to still fully use the phone that is just a big problem to me
  • What are the chances of an iPhone not showing a missed call? I called my friend, and it seemed like it was ringing, but it is possible that the service was bad. They did not answer or call me back. I'm trying to figure out if they are avoiding me. I don't want to be annoying and try to call again if they are. How likely is it that the phone did not show the call?
