The iPhone 5 has exponentially better specs than the iPhone 3g. For one the Camera on the 3G, if my memory is correct, was 2 MP, while the iPhone 5 has an 8 MP camera. The battery life is hours longer, as used to be an entirely different sized battery. The build on the iPhone 5 is nearly diamond compared to the flimsy, plastic build of the iPhone 3G and 3Gs, and the screen is not even comparable. The screen on the iPhone 3G could be equated to the resistive touch screens (normally found on GPSs). And if not most important, the processor. Prior to the iPhone 4, apple used a third party company's processor in the iPhone, and it was terribly slow, and battery consuming, while from the iPhone 4 and on, apple has created what is known as the Ax chip (A4, A5, A6) which is now the processor for all their "i" devices. Its unimaginably faster, and deals with graphics on a much higher level than before.

In the end, the iPhone 5 is definitely better than the iPhone 3G, also the iPhone 5 can run the current firmware (iOS 6.0.2, soon to be 6.1) while the iPhoen 3G is stuck on iOS 4.2.1.
