What do police do after you've been robbed?

Long story short, I was robbed by some punk kid at a park. He snatched a phone from my hand and ran off.

I called the police and they came, asked questions, and gave me a property report and business card.

It has been a week, and I called to see if there were any updates because the officer who wrote the report hasn't responded to my emails. The person that answered said there hasn't been a detective assigned to the case yet.

My question is this: what will the detective do? Just how much of a priority is some stolen iPhone to them? Especially when neither them nor I know who stole it?

Are they really going to investigate it for me or are they just going to basically document it and just file it away?

They won't do anything. You're expected to have insurance to cover your losses. Unless there's blood on the ground, the police are not going to waste their time.

They don't have enough time to deal with stolen phones. This happens 7 days a week.
Chances of getting a phone back? Zero. Sorry.

Unless you phone turns up when they arrest someone (for another crime) it only becomes a statistic. The report can aid you in an insurance claim for loss

Nothing. Its just that a police report is filed so it you took someone to court you have proof a police report was filed. They have better things to do then deal with silly phone thefts.

Unless by some miracle they caught the kid right away, the phone is gone. It's not like the cops don't care, it's just that there's not much they can do, and they're too busy with other stuff. They're not going to be assigning a detective to the case, you can count on that.

The job of detectives in America is to investigate crime against city or State property or goods. Also business that contribute to the cops good buddie fund or what ever. They do not work for the citizen for free. Now if you pay one then they will look into the crime. Such is America.

  • Robbed and iPhone taken. What now? On Monday my fiancé got robbed. Three guys came up to us punched him, dragged him to the ground and ripped his bag off, I tried to call 911 but one of them ripped the phone out of my hand. We filed a police report about it, but sadly I had no insurance on the phone. Is there any possible way to get it replaced without paying full price, possibly the price you pay when you get added to the family plan? I can't afford 300 dollars or so so what can I do?
