What does it mean when you put your iPhone on Airplane Mode?

If i go into a different country would it go on roaming? Or does it turn off everything like my text and calls?

Basically, you can't send or receive calls, but people who call you can leave messages in your voicemail. That's about it.

You'd get roaming charges the moment you took it off of airplane mode, but I'm not sure about if you left it on airplane mode the whole time…

Airplane mode for any phone is turning off all Wi-Fi, call, text - anything that involves connecting to something. Basically, the only things you can do on Airplane mode are use apps that don't involve Wi-Fi, such as Settings or Photos.

I went to Haiti over last summer, and -- after exhausting research -- found that airplane mode turns off anything you could be potentially billed for. It turns off cell service, texting, internet, etc. You may still use Wi-Fi (If I can remember). YOur music and any offline apps will work in airplane mode though.

Airplane Mode shuts down all connectivity or reception on your phone. What you should do is get your iPhone factory unlocked and when you reach different country, take out your current SIM and put a prepaid SIM bought from that country. It disables the phone's radios, aka the phone, text & Wi-Fi abilities (though you could turn back on the Wi-Fi afterwards while still being in Airplane Mode). You would avoid roaming charges that way.
