What is a data roaming cap? Do I still have to pay?

Basically a few days ago I went on a holiday to New York (from England) before I got on the plane my Iphone ran out of charge so I was unable to turn off data roaming. When I get to my hotel room I put the phone on charge and go to sleep… But when I was asleep the phone had turned itself on. In the morning I get a text telling me I had reached 98% of my £42.55 data roaming price cap (£41.70) even though I didn't even use my phone during the night… I'm on contract so does this mean I've used up all my Internet or will the price get added on to my bill? I'm quite confused (I'm on orange if it helps)

You can probably dispute this data roaming charge and not have to pay all or most of it. Call your carrier right away and explain what happened. They can validate there was no major activity during the hours of the roaming charges and will probably waive the fees to keep you as a loyal customer.

  • Would i still have to pay for Data? My sister got an new iphone and she still has her old one. If i switch from my cell to her old iphone she use to have will i still have to pay the data package a month?
  • Will jailbreaking iPhone fix Net10's data cap? I have a iPhone 4s and I heard that Net10 caps data at 1.5GB. If I jailbreak the phone, would that be a workaround to have truly unlimited data? I know you can change the APN to get MMS to work. BTW, only AT&T, Straighttalk and Net10 works where I live. I would have to drive 50 plus miles for others to work. Which is out of the question!
  • Will I still be paying roaming charges if my iPhone is on airplane mode? I live in canada an my brother got a huge bill for roaming charges when he went to new York without even calling or texting. I'll be going to new York tomorrow and I would like to know if my phone will be roaming on airplane mode
  • Using my O2 free mobile data in Spain - do I turn data roaming on or will this charge? It's now free to text and call and use mobile data in Europe and I'm on contract with O2 and have unlimited everything. I'm just wondering if on my iPhone I have to turn data roaming on to get this or will this charge me? How does it work? As when I turn on my mobile data without data roaming the 3G doesn't work until I actually turn on data roaming?
