What is the other in the iTunes memory?

When syncing an iPhone or iPod, you can select to see how much memory you are taking up. I, for instance, have used 5.34 GB in music, 474.9 MB in videos, 1.41 GB in photos, and 1.94 GB in apps. On top of that, though, it says I have used 1.46 GB in "other".

What falls into that category, exactly? Is there a way to minimize the amount of "other"? I'd like to be able to utilize more of my memory but I don't know what the "other" comes from so I'm unsure what to do about it.

The operating system software.

And probably any locally saved data related to your apps.

Safari browsing history, cookies, locally saved information from apps. That kind of stuff… Things that do not fit under the categories of "audio" "video" or "apps"

"Other" holds things like system software, contacts, Messages data, settings and things that are not listed elsewhere in the capacities list. If you want to delete the "other" files, this step by step guide will help you a lot.

  • What does Other mean in iTunes memory? My 16GB iPhone 4S keeps running out of memory. I tried syncing it today only to find out that "Other" is taking up 7GB of memory. The other categories are Audio, Books, Photos, and Apps which do not take up nearly that much space. I tried clearing out a bunch of text messages, but it didn't help. What exactly is this "Other"? What can I delete in order to gain memory back?
