What's the simplest smartphone?
So my mom has a basic phone because she just wants talk and text, nothing else. However she has been losing her phone and because it isn't a smartphone with "where's my iPhone" and its equivalent in android so she can't find it so easy. So what's a smartphone she can get without complicating things?

You don't need to get her a smartphone. Get her a Tile. It's something you put on the back of the cell phone to find it when it's missing. Problem solved.
I wouldn't suggest getting a smartphone if that's the reason, even if a locator app is an option because depending on the circumstances it wouldn't help & then you'd be out of pocket even more so.
A better thing to fo would be to help her not lose it or attach some sort of locator to it so that if it should happen again you can use that. A physical locator attachment that is.
If you want to go for a smart phone there's one made by Doro especially with technophobic old codgers in mine it has website support so someone more tech savvy can remotely help out with phone issues
