What's wrong with my access point?

I recently bought a new access point, a TP-LINK TL-WA801ND Wireless N300 Access Point to replace an old and what I thought was deteriorating Netgear router. I hooked it up and works correctly (I have it in access point mode btw), HOWEVER every once in a while my connection to the internet on my computer drops or slows down, it will either come back up in a couple seconds, or just stop working overall, and I mean my internet connection, my connection to the access point itself is fine. I have the access point hooked up to a Xfinity gateway via ethernet cable running inside my basement wall. Whenever the internet connection drops on the access point, the default gateway's Wi-Fi and internet connection remains okay, my internet connection to the access point with my mobile device is okay, it's just my computer that doesn't get internet. I know what you are thinking, maybe it's my network card, well I've gone through three different network cards and they all experience the same problem. Here's something else, after a lot of troubleshooting I've found that changing the SSID of the access point fixes this and I get internet connectivity again, but only temporarily as the problem shows up again after a couple hours or a day! I'm just really frustrated by all of this, I just want a stable internet connection that will last me a good year or two until I move out.
.
And I should note that my signal usually drops from 4/5 to 3 when this goes down.

Reminder, my iPhone connects fine.

Try to reset your netgear rounter.

My old laptop used to work fine for a few hours, and then slow right down. Moving the laptop two or three inches would solve the problem for a while. None of the other devices showed any such problems and work perfectly all the time.

Eventually I found that the cause was a weak signal from a neighbour's network on the same channel. I changed the channel that my router was using. The problem disappeared.

Further investigation showed there was another factor involved. The router was using 802.11b/g settings. I found that changing the router to 802.11b only also cleared the slowing up of the Internet to my laptop.

I still have the same laptop, but I now have a different wireless adapter in the laptop, and also a different router so that the laptop can connect to the router on either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. I no longer experience speed problems.

I hope you find an answer that suits your needs.

  • What is the point of buying an iPhone 5 if you can get iOS 6? People say when you get iOS 6, you get to get all the features an iPhone 5 has, but if thats the case then why do you need an iPhone 5? Wouldn't it just be cheaper to buy a suckish iPod and get iOS 6?
