What to do with old IPhone 4?

My old iPhone 4 randomly decided to just die one day- luckily I had already upgraded, but what should I do with the old one? It's unresponsive to anything that I can do (charge, holding down buttons), but I don't want to sell it or throw it away when it could still have my personal information stored on it!
What can I do with it?

All information stored on an iPhone is encrypted. So to access your data someone will first have to invest time and money to get it working and will then need to enter your passcode. So your data is safe.

But if you want to be extra certain then go to Find My IPhone and use the option to remotely wipe the phone clean. If anyone does then manage to get it working Apple iCloud will then connect and wipe it back to factory specs. This option only works if you previously set up Find My iPhone on your iPhone 4 when it was still functional.

In summary, you can safely send your broken phone to a phone recycling scheme: your data is safe and you may also have the option to remotely wipe it clean.

Give your old phone to an Apple Store and ask them if anything could be done to make it work again. If nothing can be done to make your old phone work again then you won't have to worry about your personal data but someone can unscrew your phone and take the memory chip off, so just make sure that you take that chip out with the help of the apple store.
Then you can rest in peace!

  • Old iPhone with old sim card? Mum just got a new iPhone, so gave her old one to my sister. My sister did not have an appropriate sized sim card, so they guy at the store cut it down. Mum's new sim card is working, but when we put my sisters in the old phone, it just keeps saying no service. What do we do? Can we use it or not?
  • Is a 6 year old old enough to have her own phone? I have a bunch of old iPhones (6,7,8) saved up and I'm thinking of putting her into the family plan. What do you think of a 6 year old having a smartphone?
  • I've been so fustrated with trying to get my old iCloud account off my old iPhone I forgot the password and recovery key to my iCloud account. I've called Apple and sent a receipt for proof of purchase, but they said it's invalid, because the SN doesn't match which doesn't make sense. Is there another way to just erase everything off the phone myself?
  • I Have An Old iPhone And I Backed It Up To iCloud. How Do I Get It On My New iPhone? I bought an iPhone but there was problems with it so I got a new one… But before I gave it away I backed everything up to iCloud. So how do I get it back and onto my new iPhone? And does it do restoring of app data as well onto my new iPhone? Such as Tiny Tower? So I don't have to start again? And does it do all my notes and contacts as well?
