When I send pictures from my IPhone, does it use data?

I just got a new IPhone and I went from a dummy phone. Since I don't have a data plan I was wondering of sending pictures requires data… I don't have a plan but I've sent a few pics. I sent a friend a pic and it said "no data plan subscribed" I turned off my cellular data and it wouldn't send pics. I need help. I don't wanna run up my bill!

MMS (pic texting) does need a data plan, but it doesn't use any data in the plan. It only uses your text plan…

here is how a MMS works… Wireless carriers have servers called APNs. The text APN portal is small. It can only handle 1000 characters or less or 1K in order to send or receive texts… So what happens what you attach a picture? Pics can be 200K or 3MB! The text APN can't handle that! So what do carriers do? They break it up… They take the SMS (the text) part of the msg and send it through the text apn… The pic is sent through the data apn… You won't use any data allowance on your data plan since the system knows its a MMS and that will come out of your text allowance plan… Your friends gets it… Their carrier put the 2 back together again and sends it to their phone… Walla… That how MMS works… And this is why people with no data plan or have a data block Can't do MMS… Cause their access to the Data APN is blocked and restricted…

so people listen up--- if you want to send and receive MMS, you need a data plan or at least have data-pay-per-use on your account. It won't charge against your data plan as that is proved on your bill, BUT---you need the Data APN portal in order to MMS… So… No data plan or data block or cellular data off = no Data APN acess which then = no MMS ability… Facts of life!

I think you should still be able to send via Imsg if you have a Wi-Fi signal. Not via celltowers though.

No they do not use data they use something else.

Start saving your money. Once your carrier learns that you have a smart phone, they are going to require you to have a data plan.
