Why can't I connect my iPhone to my car stereo?

I have an iPhone 5C and a Sony stereo. I have tried two lightning cables, but neither work. My phone will charge, but the device is not recognised according to the stereo.

Also, I have tried an aux cable: it seems like the music played through that only comes through one speaker, therefore the sound is quiet and muffled!

Could there be a problem with my phone or the stereo?
Is there anything I can try to fix this?

Sounds like you have a faulty stereo system. I would take the car to the dealer and have them take a look

What age is the Sony stereo?
Phone technology has moved so fast in recent years that car stereo technology is struggling to keep up.
A brand new iPhone compatible stereo will work with a new iPhone, and a two-year-old iPhone compatible stereo will work with a two-year-old iPhone, but expecting a 7 or eight year old stereo to work with a new phone is unreasonable.
I suspect the USB port was never designed to work with a phone, but just with a USB memory stick containing mp3 files. However it also appears that the AUX port or AUX cable is faulty, as you should get sound through all speakers.

  • Why does my car stereo make a clicking sound when I charge my iPhone? I just bought a certified preowned 2009 Mazda Mazda3 hatchback. Whenever I plug my charger into my iPhone while it's connected to the aux input I hear a repeating clicking sound through my speakers. The clicking gets faster and slightly higher in pitch as I push the accelerator. What's going on?
  • What is the device called that connects your iphone to your car stereo to play music? I want to buy the device that connects your iphone to your car stereo to play music that is on your phone (such as pandora). I need it for my long drive back to college. p.s. I just got an iphone and i'm iphone-illiterate.
  • Trouble connecting iPhone to car stereo? My car stereo has a USB/ipod setting and I can listen to any songs saved on the iphone by connecting from the 30 pin connetion to the UBS input. But for some reason I can't listen to radio apps like "TuneIn" or "I heart Radio". The only way I can listen to those apps is if I connect the iphone from the headphone jack to the AUX imput. How can I listen to the radio apps by connecting from the 30 pin to the USB?
  • Pioneer DEH-2400UB car stereo, iphone accessibility? I've been watching some reviews online, and it seems as if everyone is using a specialised cable to plug their iphones or ipods in that isn't the standard one you get from apple, i was wondering if you can jus simply plug the standard one that apple gave you into the stereo and if that will work?
