Why does the sounds on my new iPhone 4s not sound off?

I have this nice new iPhone and the ringing, text, email sounds don't "sound off". I have checked and rechecked the settings but feel I'm missing something here on this function. Any experts on iPhones here that can give me a solution?

Above the volume buttons on the side of your phone is a little switch, when it's on red it's on silent and when it has no colour it's on loud.

  • Why will my iPhone five not produce any sounds? Volume button is turned on in settings and on the side of the phone. I do not hear the keyboard clicks or any Music nor can I hear any videos. Please assist!
  • Why isn't my iPhone 4s not playing any sounds? I can play music only through my headphones, but once I pull them, no sound is made. When I hit the +&- buttons, the volume widget pops up without the volume meter bar.

I also don't get a sound when I receive mail:/ I've tried to turn the switched on and off, reset my settings, and adjust my volume. Nothin has worked so far. How can I fix it?

Yesterday I updated my iOS 4.3.3 to 6.1.3, and today, I plugged it to the charger while music was playing, and the speakers.kinda.turned off. But the "play" emblem was still there. When I unplugged the charger, the music proceeded playing. What's the problem?
