Why shouldn't middle school students be allowed to use mobile devices in class?

By mobile devices, I mean things like a cell phone, an iPod Touch, an iPhone, etc.

I'm asking so that I can get a reasonable viewpoint of why they shouldn't be allowed. I need to write an editorial for my language arts class, but I'm struggling to find any logical books or web pages that provide a possible counter argument.

If you have any reasonable ideas as to why mobile devices shouldn't be allowed in middle school classes, please tell me. (Please list All of your ideas!)

A) They distract students, and it's extremely rude
B) The enable cheating
C) Teachers have never appreciated people sending notes in class, and texts are that much worse
D) If they aren't off or silent the noises are a nuisance to everyone in class (and again, very rude)

Young minds like that are distracted enough as it is. Personally I don't think they should have phones or iPod touches at all at that age. If they are allowed the privilege it's very obvious they will abuse it. Grades will slip and they will develop a lack of pride in their work and won't be as driven.

They can be used to cheat. They can be distracting/annoying. They can get stolen.

  • Is a teacher allowed to take things from students? I was at school sitting in the office waiting for my mom to pick me up for an orthodontist appointment. I was signed out of school for the day btw. After 20 minutes of waiting I got my iPhone out to text her and a teacher told me to put it away. I told him I'm checked out of school and waiting on my mom. He said he didn't care. He grabbed my arm an tried to take my phone. He was at that point hurting me so I kicked his nuts. I told him I was going to have him arrested. Can I?

  • How to report one of the top students in my class for academic dishonesty? So we're you going into junior year and she's one of the top students in our class but I caught her all this year using her iPhone during all of our tests and even our finals! So do I just call the school? Do I need proof? Can I stay anonymous? What would her punishment be? Thanks in advance… And BTW our school has a policy about academic dishonesty and that we should report it when we see it
