Why would Apple make FaceTime only compatible with iOS devices?

It doesn't make sense what if someone has an Android! Then FaceTime is useless to the person with the iPhone who wants to video chat with the person with the Android. Someone please tell me why Apple did this, I know it's a stupid question but its bugging me

Its not just for ios, its also for mac osx lion and snowleopad, but the short answer why they didn't is cuz apple
Are the biggest bunch of *** holes in the world and have the consumer by the ball sack and they keep squeezing harder and harder and yet people keep going back for stupid features like a 9mm bigger screen… Apple+money= dominators of the world

I'm sure that when the end of the world happens it will be apples falt. They will be like skynet

This is why i never buy an apple product, but there may be another app that you can download that will allow you to.
But yeah, apple doesn't want you to associate with any other product other than their own.

Apple said the FaceTime protocols will be released as an Open Standard so that anyone can use them but it has not been ratified as an Open Standard yet. It is not a trivial thing to implement and it would be worse to have a variety of FaceTime devices which were incompatible with each other than to wait and sort out all the finer details to make it work across a range of devices.

To clear up some of the ignorant ranting above:

Apple has a long history of developing Open Source and Open Standards projects.

Apple's open source WebKit is used as a basis for many browsers…

including Chrome on Android

But never let mere facts interfere with a good old bigoted rant.
