Will an iPhone with NO CARRIER still be able to use iMessage?

I had an iPhone 4S, but canceled the plan on it completely. I was with Bell.

When I got my iPhone 6S I switched to Koodo, and therefore have a new phone #.

For some reason I assumed my old phone would still work for iMessage, and am only now wondering if it won't. Where the carrier is usually displayed, my 4S says "No Service" but is connected to Wi-Fi.

Can an iPhone with no carrier still send and receive iMessages from the old phone number?

No carrier means no phone number so obviously can't use a phone number, but you can setup your imessage to be your icloud ID then you can still message over Wi-Fi using that, people will text you back to your icloud ID, not a phone number (but it arrives as a text message to you). People do this all the time today with ipod touch but iphone will do that too.

  • Will i still be able to use my iphone in another country without jailbreaking? I bought my iphone4 in japan since i was living there for sometime. But I've moved to a different country now. And I want to use the network provided.i'm still using ios4 and i feel like my iphone has been a lot more slower than it used to. Some tell me that in order to use it in a different country i need to jailbreak it but i want to update it to ios5. Will i still be able to use it if I update it to ios5?
  • Will I still be able to use my iphone 5? I bought an iPhone 5 2 days ago. The phone was brand new and never been used. It's on a contract and instead of paying the contract (which isn't my contract its the guy who sold me it) i want to put my own nano sim in it. Will I be able to do this? It is on O2 network and I'm on tmobile so if I get it unlocked will i be able to put my own sim in it without O2 blocking the phone?
  • Will I be able to unlock my iPhone if I don't know the original carrier? Recently my old iPhone broke (water damage) in which my mother gave me her new but un used iPhone 5, I know it's locked to a different network. But I don't know which network, if I went to a shop to get it unlocked, would they be able to if I didn't know the original sim carrier?
  • Unlocked iPhone 4/4s still able to use with AT&T? My uncle has an old iPhone 4/4s (I don't remember which one) and it's an unlocked phone. Let's say he gives it to me and I have AT&T. Though it's unlocked, can I still use it with AT&T and update the phone's iOS regularly? Because I know that if you have an unlocked phone for let's say, T-Mobile, you can't update because that'll mess up your jailbreaking stuff.
