Would the iPhone 5 work in Europe?

My friend from Europe told me that the 32GB iPhone 5 is around 1300 $. I compared the price of the iPhone in the USA and it's around 850$ so my question is… If he was to buy the iPhone 5 here would it still work in Europe? Meaning, the charger and the outlets (different volts? I don't know about the layout of the outlets/plug required) Unlocking it? Being able to use it? Thanks so much!
---Or would he have to buy the iPhone 5 plan here for it to work and etc.

Yes, of course it works in europe

but you should consider about the local mobile carrier expenses.

In short: Yes, it will work. The charger is identical and compatible with either volts as they are made for travelling people. There are only two things you will need:

1. You will need to get it factory unlocked either from the original carrier or from one of the big online vendors like http://www.cellfservices.com/ to make it work with any GSM carrier worldwide, including Europe.

2. You will need to get the charger-outlet for Europe which is no problem to get in any European Apple Store.
