How to get started with photography?

Hi I'm 13 and I really want to get into photography and I know that I love it because I'm constantly taking pictures of everything etc but anyways I want to know we're to start with photography and lighting and what cameras to use and I'm currently taking photos with my iPhone 5 wich obviously isent good enough but I would like to no what my first camera should be and all that type of stuff. Sorry that was long thanks for the anwsers

If you are serious about learning the basics of photography (exposure, lighting and composition), then you really need a fully manually adjustable camera, ideally with interchangeable lenses.

That means a DSLR.

You haven't mentioned a budget, but entry level models from Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Sony would all be good. It's a matter of personal choice and feel for which one you prefer, which is why I recommend buying from a proper camera store where you can try them all out.

Once you have your camera then you really need to get learning. How you do this depends on your learning style, but college, online resources or joining a local camera club are all possibilities.

Of these, a local club is best - you will be with other keen photographers, get tuition and get meaningful feedback on your work. Most clubs have a junior section.

Deepblue gave an excellent answer.

Also explore youtube for many excellent photo training videos.

Deepblue is (as usual) full of good advice. However, you (asker) should understand that the iphone 5 is quite a decent camera. I know of a professional who has sold photos which were taken with the iphone.

In other words a good photographer will almost never say that their camera is not good enough. If you keep that in mind it will be useful in the future

The best way to get into photography is to start on a 35mm film camera, an slr such as the canon ae-1 or the pentax k1000 or pretty much any old single lens reflex camera. This way you learn how to controll a camera as every setting is manual (shutter speed, aperture, iso and focus). And it also makes you take fewer pictures. It's always the quality that matters, not the quantity, so won't want to waste your film, as it costs money, and you will take your time for every shot to make sure it's good. That's what photography is about. I also suggest you watch youtube tutorials and advice. It helps a lot. Also sick to a friend who's passionate about photography so you can always ask your friend if you have further questions.

The first time i tried to plug it into my computer and open itunes it got that error message: This iphone can't be used because the apple mobile device is not started. I never had this problem with my ipod and nano but with the iphone i do.
  • Should I get into photography? Just as a hobby, not professionally. I like taking pictures when I'm out and about. But I'm not sure if I have a talent for it. I only take pictures with my iPhone so the quality isn't that great. Here are some pictures I've taken: Because I love bacon haha:
  • My iPhone is stolen and 2-Year contract is just started? I bought a new iPhone 5 at the discounted price of $199 in NJ. Unfortunately, I lost my phone while travelling. My two-Year contract is just started and I'm not using that phone now. What are the consequences of not paying the bill or what is the procedure to cancel the plan?
