Why when you buy IPhones from different country you need to have it unlocked?

My friend told me that if i'm buying my phone from States and bringing it to asia i have to wait for 2 years for it to unlock why is that?

That is totally wrong, you can always buy unlocked phones from the US and use them in your home country. Here is one example:

Depends on where/what configuration you buy it.

Like most countries the iPhone in the US is sold in 2 ways

1) locked to a carrier, which is cheaper, but involves payments for 2 years & is locked to that 1 carrier.
2) unlocked, more expensive, one time payment & is unlocked from the start

The carrier locked versions are more widely available in their stores as well as Walmart, Best Buy, RadioShack & of course Apple's own Store.

The unlocked versions are only available through Apple Stores.

  • Will my iPhone 5 work in a different country? It's an iPhone 5, and I live in NZ. We're going on a trip to America for a couple of weeks, and I don't know if my phone will work. I don't care if I can't text or make phone calls, or about roaming or whatever with Vodafone. I just want to make sure I can use Wi-Fi like usual. Obviously the camera and iPod parts will work? But what about Internet? Cheers.
  • What is the game on iphones where you are the president and there are three different groups of people and you have to keep them all happy? In this game one of the three groups asks you if they can build something such as a school and if you say yes it could make one group angry but if you say no it can make a different group angry so you have to try to keep it balanced.
  • Using Viber on iPhone with Wi-Fi in different country? Hi so I'm traveling next week and I was wondering if it will be free to use Viber from my iPhone using Wi-Fi. If I'm connected to Wi-Fi will I be charged/ will it work in a different country. I'm going to America if that matters.
  • Is texting or calling from iPhone to iPhone free if you're in a different country? I live in the US And I'm going to Sydney, Australia for 3 weeks in a little while but I'll only be 17 when I go with one of my friends and I wanted to make sure I could communicate with my mom. There aren't many hotels I can find with free Wi-Fi or even Wi-Fi in general. The hotel we're probably going to stay in only offers wired. Both my mom and I have iPhone's so if we text or call on the cell phone data (I have Verizon) will my phone bill price be crazy high?
