Canon Lens for really close portraits?
I have the Canon rebel t4i and I already have the 40mm f/2.8 STM lens and a 55-250mm EF-S zoom lens, but I need a lens that I can put on a small tripod or just stretch my arm out to take a pic with people. My two lenses are too zoomed into our faces so are there any lenses you recommend that I can take like an "iPhone selfie" with?
Looking for a lens that I can just stretch out my arm and take a pic of my friends and I, almost like using an iPhone for my Canon.
That would be Canon 100mm macro lens = about $1, 000 to buy. Actually dslr cameras are not very good for selfies… They're heave, cumbersome in one hand and the lens will make it difficult.
You're much better off with a phone or a small point and shoot.
Your little collection of lenses is lacking the wider angles. Add the Canon EF-S 18-55mm STM. It should solve this particular problem, and I think you will find it useful in a lot more situations than the other two lenses.
Or, if your budget can handle it, you may get a step up in quality with the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon.
With all due respect to Jim A and those who gave his answer the thumbs up, you either misread the question or don't know that 40mm is wider than 100mm.
A 100mm macro is most definitely NOT the lens to use in this case. She already stated that 40mm was too close up. At arms length, a 100mm isn't even going to get a single face, much less 2 or more like the asker is wanting.
The typical (and cheapest) lens to use in this case would be the 18-55mm kit lens set at 18mm.
And yes it will be heavy and cumbersome for use as a selfie.
There will also be wide angle distortion (just like there's with a cell phone).
Using a wide lens close by gives results that are far from ideal. Use your 40mm STM. Get a wireless remote like this.

Set the camera on a tripod and just press the remote to take the shot.
Don't take portraits up close with a wide angle lens (anything less than 50mm) - you'll get facial distortion - big noses, bulging eyes & fat faces.
Ideal portrait lenses are 50mm to 200mm length.
Put the camera on a tripod & use a self timer if you want to be in it.
So you want something wider? An 18-55mm would be the best for that, or a 18-135mm, or 35mm f/1.8 for a prime lens etc., the list goes on, but generally speaking you should get something under 35mm.
