Does a contract-locked iPhone work in Europe?

I was thinking to get an iPhone here in the US before going back to Europe. The only problem is unlocked ones are too expensive, so locked ones seemed way better. But my question is do they work in Europe? For example, does AT&T cover Europe too? Do I need an international plan?

It should actually

Probably but you'll have to pay international fees.

Are you kidding me? If you get the AT&T iPhone and go back to Europe, you've to pay the International Fee which is too much. International Roaming is too expensive. Why would you do that? Rather get an unlocked model from outside Apple Store and you'll find it quite cheaper. You can go to Europe and use local SIM which is be 70% cheaper. If you need unlocked iPhone cheaper than retail, mail me.

  • Would the iPhone 5 work in Europe? My friend from Europe told me that the 32GB iPhone 5 is around 1300 $. I compared the price of the iPhone in the USA and it's around 850$ so my question is… If he was to buy the iPhone 5 here would it still work in Europe? Meaning, the charger and the outlets (different volts? I don't know about the layout of the outlets/plug required) Unlocking it? Being able to use it? Thanks so much! ---Or would he have to buy the iPhone 5 plan here for it to work and etc.
