How many hours should i leave my IPhone in rice after being dropped in water?

If it got any water inside through the connectors - so it's operation is affected in any way - it will take *days* to dry out in rice, if ever…

The rice keeps the air around it absolutely dry, but with no airflow inside the phone it does not magically force the water out.

Put the whole container of rice + phone in a very warm place - as hot as you can stand to keep your hand - and leave it for a week…

To be blunt, if the circuit boards inside the phone get wet and you do not remove the battery within minutes, there's a very high likelihood that the phone will be wrecked by internal corrosion in anything from hours to a few weeks.

The slightest trace of water (or sediment / salts from it when it dries) between any two electrical connections inside the phone will cause electrolytic corrosion - effectively the reverse of electroplating - where the voltage causes the metal to be eaten away.

The results are not pretty, it looks something like a grey-white mould is growing out the colder joints etc., but the mould is metal oxides, like rust on iron. The corrosion salts also permanently attract moisture to some extent, like spilled table salt or sugar etc.

The longer the device has both battery voltage and moisture present, the worse the effects will be.

The only way to completely prevent this is to remove the battery as soon as the phone gets wet, and not reconnect it until absolutely dry.

If you have or know anyone with a iphone/ipod toolkit, take the back off the phone, dry out any visible water and wrap the the phone in tissue, then put it in the rice in a warm place.

I've had to 'cook' a basic phone with a removable battery and casing for over two weeks before now to get full function back; there are lots of microscopic crevices and gaps under components etc. That water get in to easily but take ages to dry…

If you value your phone, don't rush it.

It depends! It can be anywhere from 24hours to 3 days.

If you quickly dropped it in a wet area (ex. Dropping it into the sink while the water is running, left it in the rain for a minute or so) I would keep it in the rice anywhere from 12-24 hours. Realistically, it would probably dry out quicker, but you are better safe than sorry! Especially with a 400 dollar phone.

If you were to drop your phone and it was submerged in water (ex. Toilet, bathtub, lake) you would want to leave it in rice for 2-3 days. Again, it may seem good after 24 hours, but you're better off to leave it and make sure it's dry throughout.

Bahaha dining out, Anyways, It should be about 30-45 minutes depending on how badly it was soaked
if you threw it into a river and let it soak for a few hours, you should probably go for 45mins to an hour

Maybe for some hours.

3-4 days… That is enough

Overnight to a day or two

  • Water logged iphone? How long do I leave it in rice? My iphone SE was sitting in a big puddle on the counter for about 15 min before I noticed. The phone was still in working condition but had a few dark and blurry spots on the screen. I went to get rice and the spots seemed to have spread. I put rice in a ziplock bag and completely covered my phone in the rice. The bag was sealed and I'm wondering how long I need to leave the phone inside? I need to use my phone the next day and I'm not sure if it will be alright.

  • How long should i put my iPhone in rice after water Damage? I had my phone in my pocket and without noticing i jumped in my pool with my buddies, I stayed in there for about 1:30 minutes and I got out of the pool immediately and tried to turn it off but my iphone didn't respond so I took the SIM out and dried it and placed it on a bag of rice with silica gel packs. How long should i keep it there? Or should I call a repair company?
