How to get my text messages back after I re-activate my iphone?

I got a re-furbished iphone as a replacement for my old one that got damaged. When I was backing up my iphone from itunes to get the information the old one had, I started getting my text messages from the days when I didn't have a phone. Then when it was finished backing up from itunes my new texts had disappeared. I just have my old ones, how do I get my new ones back?

You loaded all your new text messages, then you did a restore from a backup, thus you deleted all your new messages. So you don't get those messages.

I could feel text alerts coming in as I took it to get repaired, unfortunately the only backup I had was from before those texts were sent so i no longer have them on my phone. Is there a way I can view the texts that were sent to me while my display was broken?
