How to make a new SIM in Japan work on my Iphone 4?

I just purchased a phone w/ sim in Japan (from AU). Now I'm trying to transfer the sim to my iphone, however my iphone won't recognize the sim (or it recognize the sim but it says "no service")
what do I do? Do I have to have it unlocked at the local AU store?

Your iPhone 4 will not with an AU SIM, even if it's a CDMA model. But most likely you have a GSM model iPhone, so it will not work on AU's network regardless of what you do.

But if you have a CDMA model iPhone 4, you have to take it to AU and transfer your line there. That's because CDMA phones don't use SIMs but electronic signature numbers, which aren't card based but hardwired in the phones.

If you have a CDMA model iPhone 5, you could do the SIM transfer, but be aware that there are two GSM models and one CMDA model for the iPhone 5, and they are not compatible between carriers.

  • Will my vodafone iphone5 work in Japan? Last year in Japan my iPhone 4 was pretty much just an iPod for the whole trip. I've got an iPhone 5 now but if it's not going to work then I probably won't bother taking it Is there any kind of pay as you go SIM card I can buy to use in my phone while I'm there?
  • Will my iPhone work in US while here from Okinawa, Japan? I'm in the US for several weeks. My iPhone is not working. I have it subscribed to service in Okinawa Japan. Should my iPhone be working properly to make calls and send MMS, and check email? Is there something I need to do to make it work? Thank you. Thank you Tech One. But do I have to change carriers while I'm here? I'm still active with my current carrier from Japan.
  • Will a Verizon iPhone work in Japan? I might go to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015, by then I will have the model of iPhone that comes out in fall 2014, but would a Verizon iPhone work there?
  • Will a UK iPhone 5 work in Japan? It's on pay as you go here in the UK, and I intend to switch it to a pay as you go nano-SIM in Japan. I'm just wondering will this be possible? I want it to be able to work in Japan, obviously… Thanks!
