Why is iMovie free/automatically installed on my iPhone but I have to pay for it on my Mac?

iMovie was included on the Air when it shipped from the Apple factory. Did you buy it second-hand with storage erased and only OS X re-installed? Next time, do not pay for a second-hand Mac that does not have all the original software.

It's a mobile version. It's definitely not the same as what you'd get on a computer. Not sure why you don't have it - it came on mine when I bought it.
