Is there way to use a iPhone without paying for a data plan?

I enjoy using my iPhone, but do not want to pay for a data plan. I believe it is wrong for carriers to demand you to buy the plan just to use the phone. Even if you agree not to use cellular data. My carrier is At&t. I have tried using an old simple phone's sim card and just switching off cellular data, but they find out in little less than a month. I want to know if there's any way to use the iPhone without having a data plan. Is it possible with jailbreaking or any other means?

You should be able to turn your data off and only use Wi-Fi. Most carriers will allow you to pay a cancellation fee for just the data and then just keep a talk and text plan going

They said for my birthday in two weeks they are willing to get me an iphone and a year of data, and then i could just get my data plan renewed each year as my birthday gift.
