Lost iPhone: can police track it for me?

So I lost my iPhone 4S today.

I had set up iCloud, had location services on, and I had installed find my iPhone prior to the theft.

I had tried to track it by that method, but the thief was smart and turned it off. I even fear he may have taken out the SIM card as well.

If I report it to the police, can they track it even with possibly no sim? Would they even want to help me recover it? Is the carrier (att) able to track it? If the phone eventually gets a new carrier can it be tracked then?

Added (1). When I said the thief was smart enough to turn it off, I meant he turned off the location services and find my iPhone. I have no mean of tracking it.

Added (2). I had no screen lock.

Was your phone locked? The find iPhone app still locates your phone even if it is off I think

Have you considered that the phone could be dead?

  • Will game stop track me down? Or will the police come and find me? So I was at a wrestling tournament and when the matches started I was working concessions when I noticed something on the stairs I went up to it and it was an iPhone. I waited for someone to come back but no one did After the tournament I went to GameStop and sold it. If they deactivate the phone will GameStop or the police pursue me?
  • If you track your stolen iphone will the police retrieve it for you? My iphone was stolen last night its yet to be turned on but using the find my iphone app i should be able to find the address, the problem is that the whoever took it is not going to willingly give it back, and the people i have an idea of who took it are quite intimidating, thank you.
  • If you take the SIM card out of an iphone can the police/ family still track you? So I watched this movie called SALT it's not that old but it's a good movie. In one part she takes the SIM card out of the phone so no one can track it. But is that also true with iPhones? Like of you take the SIM card out can the police still track your phone. Because I was think yes because it has your number. But is that true? It's not traceable if you take the SIM card out. But if not is there a way and how?
  • I have lost my IPhone 4, so I have complained to the Police along with IMEI no? Is there any possibility that I will get my phone. How do they track with IMEI no. Anybody has any experience, pl.share your views, thanks
