When I connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot, I can't connect to Gmail or Twitter?

My iPhone connects to other people's networks fine, but when I'm using public hotspots gmail and twitter say no Internet connection. Why? Is there a way round it?

So basically, my iphone broke and now I have to use my dads old nokia. My iphone was an iphone 3 (I think), and my dad's nokia is an older model from a couple of years ago.
