I backed up my iPhone - where are my pictures and contacts stored?

I have an iPhone 5 and backed it up to my computer (Windows, not Mac) and iTunes says the last backup was completed today so I know it's finished. I'm going to do the newest iOS software update and I'm terrified about losing my pictures and contacts because I always hear people saying it happened to them. I've never done a software update for this reason. So my question is, where are my pictures and contacts stored on my computer? I want to make sure they are there just in case things get deleted on my phone!

So I bought this white iphone 4s off ebay right and at the time I didn't know what activation lock was and when I did find out I learned that I would have to contact the original owner or whoever still had their account attached to the phone. I tried for three days even searching over facebook for a "Hiley McCourt". No luck and as soon as I decided to just sell it over ebay myself I got a message that said "Replacement needed" I was wondering if I took it to a iphone store (with proof I bought it) would I be able to get another one?
