Nokia Lumia 1020 white noise instead of sound when recording?

I bought a Nokia Lumia 1020 and I'm amazed with it so far. Personally I like it more than my old iPhone. But just a few moments ago I decided to record a video for the first time. The picture is really good, but instead of getting any recorded sound, there's like white noise instead of anything else.Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Would i still be able to pay and will it work the same as whenever i had the iphone 4.i've been with straight talk since before the stopped selling sim cards to att phones.

Is it possible to buy a phone other than an iPhone and not regret my choice?

This is both a technological question and an existential question.

I feel the urge to get an iPhone, I think essentially I would like a phone that makes use of faster networks (currently running a galaxy ace which is slow and on a 3G & H network). I want a cute looking phone, that is good for the Internet, and has a good camera. I have been checking out the competition and worry that if I buy an alternative to an iPhone, I may just spend the next two years wishing I had bought one.

I particularly don't want a phone that looks too big, like a galaxy S4.

Any advice please?

Added (1). Thanks for the Moto X suggestion, though it's not available in UK.

I think the essence of the question is, iPhone has a lot of hype, I look around on the train in the morning, and half the people have one, is there another phone that is as good to own. £550 is a lot of money for a phone, I don't want to spend just because I'm being a sheep, I want the best phone for my money, not too big, upto technology, looks cute, and won't leave me wishing I had followed the herd.
