Can you backup your files with an unlockable iPhone whose screen is broken?

I dropped my iPhone 4, underneath the screen, all the glass fell out around my button. Now, the touch screen is unable to be touched and my phone is locked. I can't get into my phone and my data is not backed up (poor thing I should start doing). Anyway, is it possible to plug my phone into iTunes and that can back my memory up? Or is there a way I could just fix the screen but the data is still there? Please, in need of important phone numbers and photos!

My notes got deleted on my iPhone?

I was going to type an additional note on my iPhone 4, and I was about to type in a few numbers on the notes, and I accidentally hit the home button (just out of habit I guess, I really don't know why) and the notes closed. But when I opened the notes back up, all of my previous notes had been deleted. I tried to re-create the scenario again but this time nothing got deleted. Does anybody know how/why this happened? And if possible, is there a way I can retrieve my notes? Any help is greatly appreciated.
