Can I activate my unlocked iPhone 5 with another nano sim?

I bought my dad an unlocked iPhone 5, but he still didn't receive his nano sim. In order for him to use the phone, he needs a nano sim card. Can I simply put my nano sim card from my own iPhone 5, activate the iPhone and then remove it and place his own nano sim when he receives it in the mail?

Thanks for your help.

Added (1). It's not Jailbroke, but it's unlocked, so I can use it with any providers.

Can i use an iphone without a data plan? - 1

I don't want to get a data plan, but sprint won't let me buy an iphone unless i get a data plan.

if i buy a used iphone (NOT through sprint, but still sprint-compatible), will i be able to activate it without getting a data plan?

Normally, i can activate any old sprint-compatible phone without any questions asked, but i haven't tried with a smartphone. Does anyone know the answer to my question?

thanks!

Added (1). Oh, what if i got it unlocked? Would sprint still recognize the device?

Thanks

Added (1). Thanks for the help, I fixed it by adding the iPads Apple ID to the iPhones FaceTime in settings, then it shared all of the methods of receiving and I clicked the iPhones number on both the iPhone and the iPad.
