From my experience with various cables, an original Apple one and those from my local "pound shop" work equally well.
The actual charger (or rather USB 5V power unit) can make a tremendous difference.
One with a higher output current rating will allow devices to draw more power (within their designed limits) and charge faster.
I've just got a six amp rated USB power block and that charges my ipad in half the time of the previous [supposedly] 2.1A unit, with the same cable.
Agreeing with Robert - the charger itself makes a big difference. Get a higher number. OEM Apple cables always break for me, so I buy braided ones, or those than I can manually inspect to see that they are strong. I found one place that sells braided stainless steel cables, but did not need to get any.

- Regardimg charging iphone through laptop via USB cable? This is my issue. When I start my laptop (running Windows Vista), when I plug in my iPhone through USB, I can charge it and access it through iTunes as it should be but as soon as I unplug it, when I replug it the laptop doesn't recognize it and it won't charge at all. When I access device manager, I see a little triangle with an exclamation mark saying error code 10. Any idea how I can fix this issue?
