Will my iPhone work in Japan?

I'm going to Tokyo soon, and I wanted to know if I should bring my cell phone. It's an iPhone 4 (3G) with AT&T. I wanted to use it to guide me through Tokyo, and to contact people in case I meet anyone during my trip.

I've been searching around for info, but I couldn't really find a concrete answer. Some say it won't get coverage and won't work at all, others say it will work with data roaming but it will be very expensive.

In that case, should I rent a phone at the airport? How expensive is it, and is it worth it if I'm staying for a week?

AT&T does not work here in Japan. I'm using my T-mobile cell phone here but only by using Wi-Fi calling. You can pay a flat fee 900 or so yen to use Wi-Fi hotspots. You can also rent a cell phone I'm not sure the price on that. I use my Wi-Fi calling and Skype. Not sure which airport you are flying to but here is a link to Narita and cell phone rental places you can look at each place's website and decide if it suits your needs.http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/guide/service/list/svc_19.html

PS: do not have AT&T open your cell up for international charges it is super expensive

Your iPhone works in Japan. International roaming is expensive. Have you seen headlines of how some guy went on vacation abroad and ended up with a $3000 iPhone bill for international roaming?

But if you don't need to make any calls and just need data, you can get a prepaid data SIM from b-mobile.

But do I have to change carriers while I'm here? I'm still active with my current carrier from Japan.
