All the features will work, but you will have to get a new sim card on a network there, otherwise you won't be able to call, text or use 3G other than Wi-Fi. Also the wall charger plug will be different so you will have to get an adaptor for the wall socket, or just get a new charger.
To follow up on the previous answer, depending on which country you are moving from, you may not need a different wall adapter. The plug in Japan and the USA is the same size, for example. A lot of modern electronics can handle different voltage so you only need to make sure the plug fits. Just in case you wanted to take other devices as well. Japan is 100V, USA 120V. I charged my Mac stuff just fine there.
Your iPhone will work in Japan, but not on LTE, only 3G.

You can get a Sprint or Verizon iPhone and have it work on KDDI, but most foreigners get Softbank in Japan, so that's not your probable route.
Make sure you get your phone unlocked before you go to Japan.
You can buy SIM card and insert it into your iPhone, and use it in Japan if your iPhone is SIM-free. It must be SIM-free, though.
