How to avoid data roaming charges?

I'm going out of the country and I want to use my iphone for pictures and for Wi-Fi. My hotel has free Wi-Fi. If I turn my phone on airplane mode and turn off some other cellular settings will I get any charges? My parents will kill me if I do!
Oh and I can't use any 3G on my phone anyway cuz my parents blocked it.

Be aware that data roaming fees can apply even if you are traveling domestically. If you're not leaving the country, you may think you're in the clear regarding roaming charges. However, you can still be charged roaming fees in some instances; for example, US providers may charge roaming fees if you go to Alaska and they don't have cell towers there. Another example: cruise ships use their own cellular antennas, so you may be charged by your cell provider as much as $5 per minute for any voice/data usage while onboard a cruise ship. So, continue to Step 2 if you are unsure what your roaming status would be.

  • Will I still be paying roaming charges if my iPhone is on airplane mode? I live in canada an my brother got a huge bill for roaming charges when he went to new York without even calling or texting. I'll be going to new York tomorrow and I would like to know if my phone will be roaming on airplane mode
  • Using my O2 free mobile data in Spain - do I turn data roaming on or will this charge? It's now free to text and call and use mobile data in Europe and I'm on contract with O2 and have unlimited everything. I'm just wondering if on my iPhone I have to turn data roaming on to get this or will this charge me? How does it work? As when I turn on my mobile data without data roaming the 3G doesn't work until I actually turn on data roaming?
  • Text in Cuba using data roaming? Basically I'm going on holiday to Cuba in 3 days and I have a up led iPhone and on 3 network and was wondering what would be the best way of using Internet or texting Over there
  • Roaming and Wi-Fi charges abroad So I'm a bit confused at the moment with roaming and Wi-Fi. I'm abroad right now staying at my relatives house and both my iphone and iPad are connected to the house Wi-Fi and also put on aero plane mode. Will I still be charged even though I've got both of these on? Also if I'm not connected to the Internet but just use photos and no go on the Internet, will I still be charged? Thanks I was able to connect to a Wi-Fi while using aero plane mode.
