Can AT&T detect an IMEI of an iPhone from another carrier?

I have been using an unlocked Telus blackberry on the AT&T network for a year now with no problem. I do this to avoid having to pay for a data plan. I don't need data because I just use Wi-Fi. I'm going to try to do this with the iPhone. However, I keep reading that AT&T can detect the IMEI of a smartphone and add a data plan automatically. Clearly they didn't do this for my blackberry.So, can AT&T only detect the IMEIs of AT&T branded smartphones? I have heard that an unlocked tmobile phone will be detected as unknown by at&t.

  • Would restoring my iphone to another iphones settings change the imei? Basically i bought a phone from cex about 2 weeks ago and one of the buttons has stopped working. I went into the store and they said they could not fix it because the imei's were not the same. Could i have changed it by restoring it to my old iphone's setting via the restore feature on itunes?

By calling 611(the AT&T wireless customer portal), it indicated to me that it's IMEI blocked. I'm using a GoPhone SIM card and was wondering if I could just use T-Mobile instead to use the phone. Edit: I was using an iphone 3G for about a year and then moved my card over to the 4s.

Now i want to unlock my iphone to use it on any carrier. Is it safe to provide them my imei? I'm using gevey till date and worried that they will stop this trick i tell them my imei, Also if they agree to unlock, should i pay them?
