IMEI blacklisted - iPhone still works?

I got an iPhone 7 as a gift over a year ago. This phone was brand new when I got it, in packaging and untouched.

My reason for posting is because it has since come to my attention that this IMEI is blacklisted. Although, my phone works perfectly.

How could this device be lost or stolen if it was new when I got it?
How does it work perfectly if it is a blacklisted phone?

It's been on my mind and I can't get more info off the gift-giver as we're no longer in touch. Any help would be appreciated.

Iphone is disabled, connect to itunes?

Added (1). - My iphone is disabled, and it's telling me to connect to itunes.
- I've downloaded itunes on my windows 7 Thinkpad, and tried to sync with iphone 6 with the Apple USB chord
- It always gives me the message "unable to sync to iphone, 0xE8000015"

What do I do?

Why do some customers like this like to start trouble over nothing?

Yesterday at my TJ Maxx, this woman came in to return a tin of iPhone screen protectors that had nothing in it and a cracked jewelry box that had no ticket and she didn't have a receipt. So my manager and I said she needed a receipt, but she screamed, demanding we take them back anyway. So my manager went out to get another jewelry box so I can copy the ticket off of that and give her store credit and she also told me to just take back the screen protector tin. So she bought another pack of screen protectors and told me to open the pack to make sure they're all in there. So she bought them and left. 5 minutes later, she comes back, yelling and screaming at me because the screen protectors are cracked! But when I first looked at them, they were in perfect condition! So we had to refund her AGAIN for the cracked ones! What do you think her problem is?
