Good punishments for bad grades and disrespectful child?

My child, Bethan, has been misbehaving ever since school started. She has mostly D's, and one F. I've seem her perform well in her academics before, and I firmly believe that she is just slacking off this year. Also, she has shown extreme disrespect towards me. For example, when I tell her to clean her room in a polite manner, she will curse at me and call me deragaotry names and slam the door in my face. Could this be puberty? When I was her age, I certainly never would have treated my mother like this. Also, she arrives home late, much after her curfew. When I confront her about it, she screams at me saying I'm retarded and the worst mother ever etc. (How am I a bad mother if I feed, clothe her, house her, and raise her?). She also castigated me for not getting her the iPhone 5s (my response was for her to get a job, since she is of legal age to work). I don't know how she ended up this way. My oldest daughter has always shown me respect. Are there any good punishments to discipline her? I love my daughter with all my heart, so please so suggestions such as whipping etc.
