Spiritually speaking, is it a sin to buy knockoff products?

I bought a knockoff Lifeproof case for my iPhone 5, and judging by the guilt and graphic photos on the Lifeproof website on the subject, you'd think my phone was going to burst into flames of hellfire proportions just for daring to put the thing in the thing. So is putting my thing in the thing a sin?

Added (1). Too, I should say. I'm dealing with two potential sins. I'm also a Mormon, so if it's a sin in your religion, please be more specific.

Added (2). I don't understand how it's theft. It's not like anyone stole anything. It's just making something that looks kind of the same. By that logic, Hanes and Fruit of the Loom are stealing from each other, because really, how proprietary are tighty whities?

Also, no one has addressed my thing in thing compound problem…

Added (3). Well, I did review the box. It doesn't call itself lifeproof, just waterproof, dirt proof, fire proof… Hey! I guess it's safe from hellfire after all. But seriously, this is more like walmart brand chocolate sandwich cookies vs.oreos.

what is potentially problematic is that it calls itself a "redpepper neu" and lifeproof calls itself a lifeproof neu too… Hmm…

On the other side in the winter you get a free source of heat

Yes. Never buy knockoff coach purses either. Your soul will be tormented forever in hell, burning in flames. Better to waste $200 on the real thing.

Yes it's a sin. You are contributing to a business that you know is very dishonest.

Now that we know the truth, it is patriotic to buy knockoffs.

I don't think god knew what a knock off Gucci bag is.

Did you have to knock off someone to get your cheap knock off?

I hate that. The thing about it is, they post ads about buying knockoffs and that it would cost American jobs. This is true, but the only Americans that will be affected are those who distribute those items which are actually manufactured in China.

Knock-offs are a form of theft, and theft is a both a sin and a crime. You can probably figure it out from there.

Additional Details

It's theft because the maker of the knock-off is "stealing" the name/logo, and therefore also the reputation, of the owner/creator of the product and calling it their own. They therefore benefit from a reputation that they did not earn of their own merit. So, yes, the person who buys a knock-off is not stealing, but s/he buying something stolen. And since it's cheaper, they are also benefiting from illegal activity.

So, to use your underwear example. If I have some cheap tighty whities made somewhere, and put a Hanes label on them, I'm stealing from Hanes. Now if this knock-off you bought simply looks like a Lifeproof case without claiming to be such, you're probably okay.

As for your "thing in the thing compound problem," things only burst into flame when they either inherently flammable, or are made to be so.

Straight to hell with you missy!

  • Will using a knockoff iphone charging wall adapter ruin my iphone? I know that knockoff iphone chargers are bad for your iphone, but will a knock off wall adapter have any effect or harm the iphone?
  • Should we impose sin taxes on recreational items like TV's, iPhones, laptops, etc? Anti-smoking advocates want to tax cigarettes for their costs to society. Okay. How about all these items? They're often mass-produced using a lot of petroleum-based chemicals and plastics, they are designed to break easily and be obsolete quickly, they use a lot of resources, they lower workplace productivity, and so on. Rampant consumerism is doing way more damage to society as a whole than tobacco is. Should we impose a sin tax on this dangerous behavior?
  • Should I keep the baby or abort? Is it a sin? Help I'm 18 I'm not ready for a child. I don't know what to do I haven't got enough money how can I do it for free I need to save up for the new Iphone 5s
  • IPhone 5: People can't hear me speaking? People can't hear me speaking through my mic when I make a call. However, when I record a video it records audio, FaceTime works, voice memos works, and speaker phone works. What is going on? And how can I fix it? I've cleaned out the mic, I've reset my network settings, I've made sure it wasn't muted, I've restarted my phone… Nothing helps.
